The route

Paris → Brussels on the map

310 kilometres via A1 · A2 · E19. The line on this map follows the route we take in normal traffic; it may vary with the time of day and road conditions.

Three hours, two countries, no changes

We leave Paris on the A1, then branch off onto the A2 towards Cambrai and Valenciennes. You cross the Belgian border without stopping, the motorway becomes the E19, skirts Mons and heads for the Brussels ring road.

On the Belgian side, motorways are toll-free and limited to 120 km/h. The real thing to watch is the Brussels ring at rush hour: we adapt the way into the city to your address, from the south for Uccle and Ixelles, from the east for the European quarter and the airport.

This route is very popular with professionals who work with the EU institutions. Three hours on the road means three hours of quiet work, with the chance to make calls without station announcements or neighbours.

It is also the fallback when the trains are not running: strikes, incidents or fully booked trains on the eve of an EU summit. A WhatsApp message is all it takes, and we reply quickly.

An honest comparison

Door to door: private car or train?

Car with driver 3h 05min

From your front door to your destination address, with no changes and no luggage to carry.

Train, door to door 2h 52min

1h 22min on the train, plus around 1h 30min to get to the station, wait for departure and complete the journey at the other end.

Our straight-talking verdict

Eurostar links the two stations in 1h 22min: for a solo traveller, it wins comfortably. A car with driver comes out ahead when there are several of you, when your address is not near Brussels-Midi station (Waterloo, Uccle, Louvain-la-Neuve), when trains are full or cancelled, and when you are travelling with children or lots of luggage.

Good to know before you set off

  • → Brussels has a low emission zone (LEZ) covering the whole region. Making sure the vehicle is compliant is our job: you have nothing to do.
  • → Belgian motorways are toll-free and limited to 120 km/h. The Brussels ring is congested between 7am and 9.30am and between 4pm and 7pm.
  • → Belgium is in the Schengen area, but valid ID is still compulsory.
  • → For Zaventem, allow some extra time: the airport approach is often busy in the morning.
