An honest comparison

Door to door: private car or train?

Car with driver

2h 25min

From your front door to your destination address, with no changes and no luggage to carry.

VS

Train, door to door

2h 32min

1h 02min on the train, plus around 1h 30min to get to the station, wait for departure and complete the journey at the other end.

Our straight-talking verdict

If you are travelling alone with no luggage, take the TGV: 1h 02min from station to station is unbeatable. A car with driver makes sense from three people upwards, when you are leaving from the suburbs or an airport, when you have several appointments on site, or to get back after the last train. A same-day return with the driver waiting for you is also a very popular option.

The shortest route on our map

Paris–Lille is the A1 all the way: out through Porte de la Chapelle, past Roissy, then due north through the Oise, the Somme and the Pas-de-Calais. No detours, no complicated motorway interchanges: 225 kilometres of almost straight road.

The A1 is one of the busiest motorways in France, with heavy lorry traffic from Belgium and the northern ports. Driving it calls for anticipation rather than speed, and that is exactly what makes the difference to comfort on board.

The trip is short enough to do without a break, but we offer one at the Aire d’Assevillers service area, halfway, for families and anyone who wants it. The rest of the time, you can work, sleep or watch the Picardy plains roll by.

On arrival, Lille is easy to get around: we drop you outside your hotel in Old Lille (Vieux-Lille), in front of Lille Grand Palais for a conference, or at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium for a match or concert.
