An honest comparison

Door to door: private car or train?

Car with driver 9h 00min

From your front door to your destination address, with no changes and no luggage to carry.

Train, door to door 7h 15min

5h 45min on the train, plus around 1h 30min to get to the station, wait for departure and complete the journey at the other end.

Our straight-talking verdict

The TGV takes nearly six hours, the plane barely over an hour excluding airport time: for a solo traveller, the car makes no sense. It becomes worthwhile for six or seven passengers in a van (the price per person drops sharply), with a pet, lots of luggage, people who do not fly, or if you want to make the road trip a journey with an overnight stop.

Unique to this route

One day or two?

Nine hours on the road is a decision. Here are the two ways to do Paris–Nice with us, so you can pick the one that suits you.

Straight through, in one day

  1. 1 A very early start, around 5am, to get out of Paris before the traffic.
  2. 2 Three breaks: Burgundy, the Drôme, then the Esterel.
  3. 3 A quick lunch on the road, around Lyon or Valence.
  4. 4 Arrival in Nice in the late afternoon, after about eleven hours.

Over two days, with an overnight stop

  1. 1 A mid-morning departure, with no dawn alarm.
  2. 2 An overnight stop in Lyon, Avignon or Aix-en-Provence.
  3. 3 Dinner and an evening stroll on the way: the trip becomes a journey.
  4. 4 Arrival in Nice around midday the next day, well rested.

From the Seine to the Baie des Anges

The A6 to Lyon, the A7 along the Rhône to Aix-en-Provence, then the A8, La Provençale, through the Var and the red rocks of the Esterel, all the way to Cannes and Nice. Nine hundred kilometres and three completely different landscapes.

A trip this long needs planning. We offer two options: straight through, with a very early start and three breaks, or over two days, with an overnight stop in Lyon, Avignon or Aix-en-Provence.

Let’s be honest: for a solo traveller, flying or the TGV is faster and cheaper. This trip is for people for whom the road makes sense: large families, travellers with a pet or lots of luggage, people who do not fly, or anyone who wants to turn the trip into a real journey.

On arrival, we drop you on the Promenade des Anglais, in Old Nice, at the airport or further afield: Monaco, Menton, Cannes or Antibes.
